Shenfield is one of the most expensive places to live in Essex, and the arrival of the Elizabeth Line has only sharpened that. The station is the eastern terminus of the line as well as a main-line stop into Liverpool Street, which has made the surrounding streets some of the most in-demand commuter addresses in the county. The practical consequence for a decorator is straightforward: these are large houses, owned by people with high standards and limited patience for disruption, and the work has to be right.

The village core is genuinely old. St Mary the Virgin, at the northern end, is Grade I listed and best known for its remarkable timber-framed belfry and spire, carried on a medieval oak frame. Shenfield Common spreads south toward Brentwood and gives much of the area its green, low-density feel. Around all of that sits the housing that actually pays the bills: substantial interwar detached houses, Arts and Crafts influenced villas, mock Tudor from the 1920s and 30s, generous post-war detached properties, and a steady supply of high-specification new builds and full remodels.

Hutton Mount

Hutton Mount, straddling the Shenfield and Hutton boundary, is the most exclusive address in the Brentwood area. It is a private estate with private roads maintained by residents, gated entrances, and covenants that have long governed the appearance and alteration of properties within it. The houses are large — frequently four to six bedrooms on substantial mature plots — and the standard expected is correspondingly high.

Working on the Mount means working discreetly. We keep vehicle movements to a minimum, park considerately on private roads, avoid early starts that carry across quiet streets, and clear away thoroughly each day. On exteriors we put forward colour schemes that sit within the established character of the estate, and we are happy for you to check anything with the residents' association before we commit. None of this is complicated; it just requires a decorator who has done it before and does not need telling.

Scale, Height and Access

The single biggest technical difference between Shenfield work and a standard suburban job is scale. Double-height entrance halls, galleried landings and stairwells running through two or three storeys are common here, and they cannot be done safely or well off a ladder propped on a step. We use properly assembled internal access towers and stair-specific platforms, which takes longer to set up and produces a finish that is actually consistent from top to bottom. Large uninterrupted wall runs are unforgiving of poor technique, and a cut line that wanders is far more obvious across a twelve-foot wall than a nine-foot one.

Wallpaper in these spaces is its own discipline. Hanging a patterned paper up a full-height stairwell requires the drops to be planned, the pattern repeat worked out properly, and the whole thing to be hung from a stable platform. It is some of the most satisfying work we do and it is genuinely where experience separates one decorator from another.
