Hornchurch is the largest and, in parts, the most expensive residential area in the London Borough of Havering, and it has always felt more Essex than London. It carries an RM postcode, it sits on the eastern edge of the capital with open country beyond, and the people who live here overwhelmingly identify with Essex rather than with inner London. For a decorating firm based in Benfleet it is a natural extension of the patch: around thirty-five minutes along the A127, with no congestion charge and no ULEZ complications for a modern van.

The town has real history. St Andrew's Church, at the top of the High Street, is unique in England for the bull's head and horns mounted on its east gable, from which the town takes its name. Hornchurch Country Park to the south occupies the site of RAF Hornchurch, one of the principal fighter stations of the Battle of Britain, and several of the original pillboxes still stand among the grassland. The Queen's Theatre on Billet Lane has been a producing house for decades and gives the town a cultural centre that most outer-London suburbs simply do not have.

Emerson Park

Emerson Park is the reason we cover Hornchurch. Laid out from the late nineteenth century as a high-class residential estate on generous plots, it remains the most substantial concentration of large detached housing in Havering: wide, quiet, tree-lined roads, houses set well back behind mature front gardens, and a mixture of surviving Edwardian and interwar villas alongside significant modern rebuilds on the original plots. It has its own station on the Romford to Upminster line and a distinct identity that residents are rightly protective of.

These are big houses, and the work reflects it. Full exterior repaints here almost always require proper scaffolding rather than ladder work — the elevations are tall, often three storeys with substantial rendered surfaces and deep eaves, and there is no safe or good-quality way to do them off a ladder. We include scaffolding in the quote transparently rather than hiding it, because it is a real cost and pretending otherwise leads to arguments later. Inside, expect double-height hallways, large reception rooms and the kind of wall areas where poor cutting in shows from across the room.

The Interwar Streets

Away from Emerson Park, most of Hornchurch is 1930s. The town expanded enormously between the wars as the District line and the arterial roads opened up the area, and the result is street after street of well-built bay-fronted semis and detached houses through Ardleigh Green, Elm Park and the roads around the High Street. This is the classic decorating stock of outer Essex: rendered or pebbledashed above brick, deep bays with leaded top lights, picture rails, panelled doors, and generous but not enormous rooms.

It is honest housing that rewards proper preparation. The most common problem we find is not damage but accumulated paint — eighty or ninety years of gloss on door frames and window boards, layered until the detail has softened and the surface has gone lumpy. Getting that back to a crisp, flat finish takes stripping and rebuilding, not another coat.
