Hutton sits immediately east of Shenfield on the Brentwood side of the Essex commuter belt, and it is a more mixed place than its well-known neighbour. Where Shenfield is fairly uniformly large and expensive, Hutton runs the full range: a genuine old village core at the northern end, a substantial band of 1930s semi-detached and detached housing, extensive post-war estate development from the 1950s through the 1970s, and a share of Hutton Mount, the private estate it shares with Shenfield.

All Saints' Church anchors the older part of the parish and has medieval origins. Hutton Village, the lane running north from it, retains a rural character that is increasingly rare this close to the M25. Further south, Hutton Poplars is worth knowing about: the site was originally developed in the early twentieth century by the West Ham Poor Law Guardians as a residential school for children from the East End, and although most of the original institution has gone, Hutton Poplars Hall and the surrounding parkland remain, with modern housing built across part of the former grounds.

Artex and Textured Ceilings

If there is one job that defines decorating work in Hutton's post-war housing, it is textured ceilings. An enormous proportion of the 1960s and 70s stock here has Artex or a similar textured coating on ceilings and sometimes walls, and almost everyone who buys one of these houses wants it gone.

There is an important safety point that any competent decorator should raise before touching it. Textured coatings manufactured before the year 2000 may contain chrysotile asbestos. They are entirely safe while intact and undisturbed, but sanding or dry-scraping them releases fibres and is genuinely dangerous. We never sand textured coatings of unknown age. The correct approach in almost every case is to leave the material undisturbed and skim over it with fresh plaster, which encapsulates it completely and gives you a flat ceiling with no risk at all. Where removal is genuinely necessary rather than cosmetic, that is a job for a licensed asbestos contractor and we will tell you so rather than take it on.

Skimming over is usually faster, cheaper and safer than removal, and the finished result is identical. It is one of the most common conversations we have with new owners in Hutton and it is worth having properly.

Post-Purchase Redecorations

A great deal of our Hutton work happens in the window between completion and moving in, when a house is empty and everything can be done at once. This is far and away the best time to decorate. There is no furniture to work around, no sequencing needed to keep rooms usable, and we can move through a whole property efficiently — ceilings skimmed, walls prepared and painted, joinery stripped back and rebuilt, and any wallpaper hung last. If you have just bought in CM13 and have a few weeks before you move, talk to us early; the schedule is tighter than people expect and good decorators book up.

The Village End and the Estates

The older properties toward Hutton Village need a gentler approach: uneven wall surfaces that show every flaw under a modern flat matt, occasional lime plaster, and joinery that has been painted many times over. The interwar semis are classic 1930s stock with bay windows, picture rails and original panelled doors worth recovering. The post-war estates are plainer, well-proportioned and straightforward to decorate well.
