Eastwood occupies the north-western corner of the Southend-on-Sea borough, filling the space between Leigh-on-Sea to the south and Rayleigh to the north-west, with London Southend Airport along its northern edge. It is a residential area first and foremost, and it has a very different character to the coastal parts of the borough: less period grandeur, more solid, well-built family housing, and a great many bungalows.

The area is older than it looks. St Laurence and All Saints Church on Eastwood Road North has stood since the twelfth century and is among the oldest churches in Essex, notable for its Norman doorway and its early timber work. Almost everything around it, though, is twentieth century. Eastwood grew in two main waves: interwar ribbon development along the main roads in the 1930s, and then substantial estate building through the 1950s, 60s and 70s as Southend expanded outward. Belfairs Woods sits on the southern boundary and the A127 runs along the top, which is why the area is so well connected and so consistently popular with families.

A Borough Full of Bungalows

Eastwood has one of the highest concentrations of bungalows anywhere in south Essex, and that genuinely changes the work. A bungalow exterior can usually be reached from ladders and low-level towers rather than full scaffolding, which takes a meaningful chunk out of the cost of a complete exterior repaint compared with a two-storey house. Long, uninterrupted runs of render and pebbledash mean the finish has to be consistent across large areas with nowhere to hide a joint, and the fascia, soffit and bargeboard runs are proportionally longer than on a house of the same floor area. We quote bungalow exteriors on their own terms rather than pro-rating a house price.

Inside, many of Eastwood's bungalows have been in the same ownership for a long time and are now being redecorated in full, often between owners or as part of a wider modernisation. That usually means dealing with decades of accumulated wallpaper, textured ceiling coatings, and hardwood-effect gloss on joinery that needs proper preparation rather than a coat over the top. 1930s Semis and Post-War Estates

The interwar semis along and around the main roads are classic south Essex stock: bay-fronted, pebbledashed or rendered above brick, with picture rails, panelled doors and decent ceiling heights. Many still have their original hardwood internal doors buried under layers of paint, and stripping them back is a job worth doing properly if you want the finish to last.

The post-war estates are plainer but well proportioned, and they are where a lot of our repeat work comes from — one house on a street leads to the next, which is a large part of how a decorating business actually grows in an area like this. Rendered and pebbledashed elevations are the norm across almost all of it, and getting a durable exterior finish on pebbledash depends far more on stabilising the surface properly than on how much paint goes on afterwards.
