Brentwood is where the Essex commuter belt turns genuinely expensive, and its interiors reflect that. The town grew up around the old Chelmsford-to-London road and kept its layers: timber-framed and Tudor-influenced cottages in the older lanes, Georgian and early Victorian townhouses along and behind the High Street, then wave after wave of substantial interwar and post-war detached housing pushing out toward Shenfield, Hutton, Warley and Ingrave. Almost every decade of the last four hundred years is represented somewhere in CM13, CM14 or CM15, and each one wants painting differently.

Period Interiors, Handled Properly

The older properties are where the real skill lies. Timber-framed cottages have walls that are rarely flat and rarely plumb, and a modern dead-flat matt emulsion is unforgiving of both — it shows every undulation under raking light. We often recommend a paint with a little more forgiveness in its sheen for these rooms, and we prepare to suit the wall rather than fighting to make an old wall behave like a new one. Where we find genuine lime plaster we specify a breathable mineral or clay-based paint, because sealing lime with a modern impermeable emulsion traps moisture and the finish blows within a couple of years.

Georgian and Victorian townhouses bring the opposite problem: tall, generous rooms with a great deal of ornate joinery and plasterwork that has been painted many times over. Deep skirtings, moulded architraves, panelled shutters, dado and picture rails, coved cornices and ceiling roses all accumulate paint until the crispness is gone. Recovering that detail means stripping and rebuilding the finish rather than adding another coat, and it is slow work that makes an enormous difference to how a room reads.

Colour, and Getting It Right First Time

Brentwood clients tend to care about colour and to have thought about it before we arrive. We work extensively with Farrow & Ball, Little Greene and Paint & Paper Library, and we are happy to put large sample boards up in the actual room and leave them for a few days so you can see a colour in morning light, afternoon light and lamplight before committing. Period properties in particular reward historically sympathetic palettes; a Georgian drawing room and a 1930s Hutton semi want genuinely different treatments, and a colour that sings in one will fall flat in the other.

Large Homes, Long Runs, High Halls

Much of the interwar and post-war stock around Shenfield, Hutton Mount and the roads off Ingrave Road is large: double-height entrance halls, galleried landings and stairwells running through two or three storeys are common. These cannot be painted safely or consistently off a ladder propped on a step. We use properly assembled internal access towers and stair platforms, which takes longer to set up and produces a finish that holds from top to bottom. Long, uninterrupted wall runs are equally unforgiving — a cut line that wanders shows far more across a twelve-foot wall than a nine-foot one.

Working Around You

Most Brentwood households are out on weekdays, and a great deal of our work here runs on keys or an alarm code with progress photos sent through so you can see where things stand without having to ask. We agree in advance which rooms will be out of action and when, sheet and protect properly, use dust-free sanding throughout, and clear down at the end of each day rather than leaving a site running all week. If you would rather we only worked when someone is home, that is fine — we just need to know at quote stage so the schedule is honest.
