Rayleigh is a proper Essex market town with a housing stock that tells the story of its growth. The area around Rayleigh Mount, the Norman castle motte that's been standing since shortly after 1066, has some of the town's oldest properties, including the Grade II listed medieval hall house at 91 High Street that now houses the town museum.
