Grays is Thurrock's principal town and one of the most architecturally varied places we work in. The town centre still has Victorian terraces dating from the late 1870s, when artisans' cottages went up along streets like Clarence Road to house workers from the wharves and the Seabrooke brewery that once dominated Bridge Road. Move outwards and you hit the 1930s semis around Bradleigh Avenue and Lodge Lane, the large-scale 1950s council estates at Stifford Clays, and then the entirely modern world of Chafford Hundred, built from 1988 onwards on 600 acres of former chalk quarry. Victorian Terraces and Period Properties

The Victorian terraces around central Grays have lime plaster walls, lath-and-plaster ceilings, and construction methods that demand a decorator who understands them. Lime-based systems are breathable. If you slap modern vinyl emulsion over lime plaster you trap moisture, and within a couple of years the paint bubbles and the plaster starts to fail. We use appropriate breathable paints and primers on these properties. The same applies to original timber windows and doors, where proper preparation and flexible coatings extend their life rather than sealing in the problems. Nearby, the Grade II* listed State Cinema, designed by F.G.M. Chancellor and opened in 1938 with seating for 2,200, and the Grade II listed Church of St Peter and St Paul with its Norman origins, are reminders of the architectural heritage running through this town.

Chafford Hundred and Modern Estates

At the other end of the spectrum, Chafford Hundred was designed by architect Owen Luder and built from 1988 to house 5,000 homes on former quarry land. These modern properties have plasterboard walls, gypsum finishes, and contemporary renders that are straightforward to work with but benefit from professional finishing. Builder-grade paintwork on these homes is typically two thin coats of trade matt, and after 20-30 years many are due a proper refresh. The Stifford Clays estate, developed by Thurrock Council in the 1950s-60s, sits between these two worlds. Its rendered blockwork exteriors and traditional plaster interiors need a decorator who can handle both period prep and modern finishing.
