Canvey Island is unlike anywhere else in Essex. Reclaimed from marshland by Dutch engineers in the 1620s, the island sits nearly two metres below the daily high tide mark, which creates very specific challenges for anyone maintaining property here. We've been decorating homes across Canvey for decades and understand exactly what these properties need to look good and last.

Much of the island's current housing stock dates from two distinct periods. The pre-war bungalows, many built during Canvey's heyday as the fastest-growing seaside resort in Britain, line streets along Furtherwick Road and the eastern wards. Then there are the homes built during the major reconstruction programme after the devastating 1953 North Sea flood, which claimed 58 lives on the island and led to a complete rethink of the housing stock. These post-flood properties were built to be more resilient, but they still need the right decorator who understands coastal conditions.

Why Island Properties Need Specialist Care

Salt-laden air from the Thames Estuary is the biggest factor we deal with on Canvey. Microscopic salt particles bond to painted surfaces and gradually break down protective coatings from the outside in. We always wash exterior walls thoroughly to remove salt crystals before any preparation work begins, as regular water alone is not enough. Our exterior paint specifications are specifically chosen for coastal durability, with flexible, breathable formulations that can handle the constant moisture movement that comes with living at sea level.

Damp is the other common issue. With the water table so close to the surface and the island's flood history, many Canvey properties have higher moisture content in their walls than you'd find in Benfleet or Hadleigh up the hill. We use damp-resistant paint systems where needed and can advise on whether a property needs breathable masonry coatings rather than standard exterior paints that might trap moisture behind the surface.

Canvey is bungalow country. Single-storey properties dominate the island, from the original 1930s holiday homes to the larger post-war family bungalows along Long Road and Third Avenue. We've decorated hundreds of bungalows over the years and know the particular requirements. Exteriors are more exposed to wind-driven rain without the shelter of a second storey, so preparation and product choice matter even more. Inside, the lower ceiling heights mean every brush mark and roller line is visible at eye level, so our finish quality has to be spot on.
